The offer of a free sample has undoubted appeal for many people and some product manufacturers run promotion schemes by giving away either a full pack or a sample of their product in the expectation that, once tried and found acceptable by the housewife, it is likely to be purchased regularly in the future. This is not, however, a method which recommends itself to a brand leader or a producer whose product already holds an appreciable market share, because too great a loss of revenue can result from the use of free samples by users who would normally have bought the product. For a manufacturer new to a market, however, there is considerable merit in the sampling method. Not only does the new brand obtain wide distribution and testing by consumers; during the period of the promotion a drop in the sale of competitive brands is likely to occur.
